The latest national count

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 4,588 confirmed measles cases for 2026 in data updated October 23, covering reports received through October 22. The figure is more than double the 2,289 confirmed cases recorded for all of 2025.

Of this year’s cases, 4,570 were reported by 47 US jurisdictions and 18 involved international visitors, according to the CDC. The agency listed 43 new outbreaks during 2026 and said approximately 96% of confirmed cases were linked to outbreaks.

The national total is a surveillance figure rather than a precise count of every infection. Reporting delays, testing patterns and undiagnosed cases can affect what appears in official data.

Why public health officials are concerned

Measles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly where vaccination coverage is incomplete. The CDC emphasizes that two doses of the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine provide the best protection for most people.

A rising count creates pressure on local health departments to trace exposures, notify communities and protect people at greater risk of severe illness. Infants, people who cannot receive certain vaccines and those with weakened immune systems can be especially vulnerable.

The CDC’s October update also illustrates the difference between a new weekly report and the date on which each patient became ill. Recent weeks can initially appear to have fewer cases because surveillance records continue to be updated.

What readers should know

People planning travel or concerned about possible exposure should consult current guidance from their local health authority and confirm their vaccination status with a qualified clinician.

The CDC advises people who think they have measles to contact a healthcare provider before arriving at a clinic, so staff can arrange precautions that reduce exposure to others.

These numbers describe the situation as of the CDC’s stated reporting date and may change in later updates.
