Reliance Industries reported a 40.6% quarterly profit increase on October 30 as refining earnings and Jio growth outweighed weaker retail margins.

News event: October 30, 2026. India’s Reliance Industries reported a 40.6% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit for the quarter ended September 30, supported by stronger refining economics and growth in its digital services business.

The company earned 255.48 billion rupees, approximately $2.69 billion, exceeding the 214.19 billion rupees average estimate compiled by LSEG, according to Reuters. The results illustrate how Reliance’s mix of energy, telecom and retail operations can produce sharply different performances within one reporting period.

Refining provides the biggest lift

Core earnings at Reliance’s refining operation rose 68%. The group reported record crude processing volumes and adjusted its sourcing and export patterns as disruption around the Strait of Hormuz affected shipping and fuel markets. It purchased crude from several regions and directed refined products toward markets offering better returns.

Those gains reflect favorable market conditions as well as operating decisions. They do not necessarily imply that similarly strong margins will persist if oil supply routes normalize or fuel demand weakens.

Jio grows while retail faces pressure

Jio Platforms, Reliance’s digital services business, recorded a 16.6% rise in core earnings after a major stock-market debut earlier in the week. Demand for connectivity and digital services helped broaden the company’s profit base beyond refining.

The retail division had a tougher quarter. Its core earnings fell 10.2%, and its margin narrowed to 7.8%, reflecting investment in digital commerce, higher costs and the timing of the festive shopping season. Reliance added 303 outlets but also exited weaker locations, leaving its store network close to 20,000.

What happens next?

Reliance plans to expand JioMart, quick-commerce delivery capacity and smaller fulfillment locations in fiscal 2027. Management expects a later phase to focus more heavily on monetization through marketplace activity and private-label sales.

Investors will watch whether the retail investments eventually improve profitability and whether the refining segment can sustain its recent momentum. Despite the strong quarterly report, Reuters noted that Reliance shares had declined substantially during 2026, underscoring the difference between one quarter’s earnings and the market’s longer-term expectations.
